World-Class Patient Safety
The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates the use of checklists in hospital operating theatres by 2010. In the UK, the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has endorsed the WHO position. Why? Because surgical error kills people and hospital checklists reduce the chance of surgical mistakes.
The UK Parliamentary Health Committee estimates that 10% of patients admitted to UK hospitals suffer avoidable harm whilst in the care of the National Health Service. In their report published on 3 July 2009 they go so far as to describe patient safety as 'disastrous' in some healthcare Trusts.
Clearly, patient safety needs to be taken seriously.
